"Introduction to Data Journalism": workshop for MCFA Students
The Faculty of Mass Communication and Fine Arts at Maaref University held a workshop titled “Introduction to Data Journalism” on Monday, July 20, 2020. The workshop was presented by Al Mayadeen Journalist Saja Mortada, which was within the framework of a series of workshops organized by the faculty. A number of soon-to-be MCFA graduates attended the four-hour session.
The workshop introduced students to data journalism and its importance. Mortada reviewed significant strategies on how data can be used to develop journalism skills. She discussed approaches on how to search and choose relevant ideas and find appropriate data-driven stories. The trainer also discussed methods for data collection, validation, analysis, writing, and design.
The workshop sought to empower students with the capabilities to reveal stories hidden in data and make the information instantly understandable. Students were given important tools needed to prepare news reports based on data, including how to refine and purify the data using spreadsheets and visualizations. Upon completion of the workshop, students received a certificate of participation, signed by the faculty dean Dr. Ali Takash and trainer Ms. Saja Mortada.
