MCFA’s Seminar "The War Correspondent: Reporting Under Fire"
MU students from the ‘Seminar in Journalism and Digital Media’ course at the Faculty of Mass Communication and Fine Arts (MCFA) organized an engaging panel discussion titled 'The War Correspondent #Reporting_Under_Fire'. The event, hosted at the university campus (Block A) on Thursday, November 16, 2023, welcomed distinguished guests, including journalist and academic Dr. Diaa Abu Taam and journalist Mr. Sultan Suleiman. The dynamic discussion was skillfully moderated by students Ghadi Fadel, Fatima Yaqoub, Noor Shaaban, and Noor Al-Zahraa Fneish. The audience included faculty members, students, and other interested individuals.
In the first segment, Dr. Abu Taam highlighted the importance of caution before broadcasting news, emphasizing the need to verify information from reliable sources. He warned against the spread of false news and rumors, deliberately or unintentionally, which could sow discord or undermine credibility. Dr. Abu Taam also advised war correspondents to be selective in their reporting, preserving information that may cause harm or benefit the enemy.
In turn, journalist Suleiman emphasized the importance of war correspondents being aware of potential risks. He stressed the necessity for them to take all logistical and preventive measures, including carrying a first aid kit, a specified amount of cash, a helmet, and a protective vest. Suleiman also highlighted the significance of inspecting equipment, ensuring the condition of the vehicle, and compiling a list of names of individuals in the area they are heading to. These individuals could assist in obtaining information and navigating the field. Additionally, he underscored the crucial need to choose a safe location for coverage, refrain from approaching areas under bombardment, and not be swayed by emotion or enthusiasm.
It is worth mentioning that the first segment included the presentation of an audio message from a correspondent of Al-Manar TV in the occupied Palestinian territories, specifically addressing the students of Al Maaref University (MU). In this message, he narrated the pain of displacement from Gaza on both emotional and professional levels. The seminar also featured contributions from the audience, fostering discussions between them and the guests.
