Media Coverage of the Public Protest
On Thursday, November 17, 2019, Student Clubs at Al-Maaref University organized a discussion seminar with the journalist Pierre Abi Saab, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar. This seminar‘s title was "Media Coverage of Public Protests: Between Responsibility and Misinformation”. The attendees was composed of students, professors, administrators and those interested in politics and media.
At the outset, Mr. Abi Saab stressed on the importance of determining the position of the sensitive situation that Lebanon is going through, considering that blurry position is one of the worst positions taken by the individual. He also stated that the corruption that affect some state institutions, would also affect some media institutions. Where these institutions seek to convey the protests’ image that suits them.
He also pointed out that some of the media deliberately asks and answers the proposed question on the protesters at the same time. Deeming that this way of performance contradicts the professional standards of the media, calling media students to work seriously to convey the real pain of people.
During the meeting, Mr. Abi Saab answered the attendees’ questions, which focused on the media professionalism and standards.
