As part of the activities of the National Reading Week, and to shed the focus light on the significance of reading that ameliorates the educational process, awareness and culture, the Faculty of Mass Communication and Fine Arts at Al-Maaref University hosted the well-known journalist Dr Sami Kolaib who delivered a session titled “Reading in the Media Dictionary: Challenges and Aspirations”.
During the one-and-a-half-hour dialogue conducted with the guest and moderated by the students Sara Mortada and Ali Sabra, Mr Kolaib recommended reading the books that are based on references and are refereed. He pointed that such books provide further information and credible as well, advising the students to enjoy reading, because some persons prefer the quick reading which it is useful in some professions, such as diplomacy and reporting (such as news anchoring).
Mr Kolaib, who received a warm welcome from the Faculty’s Dean Dr Ali ElTakach, the Instructors of Seminar in Journalism and Digital Media Dr Samar Kalakesh and Dr Ali Kassir, the students and a number of journalists and cultural figures, stressed that the good journalist should diversify in reading. He argued that such diversity in reading enhances the critical thinking, pointing to the importance of maintaining a close relationship between the student and the book, which ultimately contributes to the student’s faster understanding, and his/her ability to debate and discuss any topic on media.
The seminar was opened with verses from the Holy Quran recited by student Hadi Salameh, followed by the Lebanese national anthem and a welcoming speech by the student Ghadir Nasser. Then, a report prepared by the students Ali Yasin and Rukaya Farhat has been displayed. The report included interviews with the news anchor Samar Abu Khalil, Dr. Talal Atrisi, and the reporter Mohammed Nesr, and all the interviewees talked about the importance of reading because it refines the personality of the media professionals and increases the analytical ability to form a creative and innovative personality.
